Contemporary (1980s to present)
The pearl was embraced once again in the 1980s by Princess Diana who inspired women with her jewellery and fashion sense. A genuine pearl necklace still represented luxury, wealth and status but fashion would ultimately dictate jewellery design. In this period, fashion pearls are reinvented to complement women’s dress style and to create a total look. Women wear fashion jewellery to identify their personality and style rather than their status. Today’s contemporary designers are more experimental than ever before with jewellery artists producing innovative designs that marry art and pearls into fashion forward jewellery.
